Gotham Residence

2022

This project consisted of optimizing the space with custom millwork in different rooms. In a limited square footage, the main intention was to create more storage and maintain a charming residence. This overhaul shows that even with a limited budget, a good design can still be achieved through a complete space transformation.

The kitchen: The design of this kitchen faced multiple challenges, from budget restrictions to existing condition limitations. The kitchen consists of a white, gray, and sage palette with a contrast of special elements such as the black metal handles and wood floating shelves. The combinations achieved a clean, minimalistic, and modern look. The white countertop was the perfect choice to enlighten the narrow layout and provided plenty of workspace in the kitchen. Floating shelves allowed sets up a stage for the smaller details, décor, cooking books, etc. The sliding door on the back provides access to the backyard deck of the house, allowing abundant natural light to enter the space.

Play Room: The goal of this space was to accommodate the needs of three young kids of different ages. With a quick transformation, the new layout provided a multifunctional area that could be used for playing, creating, reading, or studying. Barn doors were installed to separate the dining room and the playroom, giving the flexibility to create a large open space when required and hide the mess when needed. Large windows were added for light and ventilation. A big area rug provides comfort and a pop of color. To keep the room tidy and organized and yet provide storage for the many toys, we used IKEA cabinets that were strategically specified and topped with an oak wood slab. This became a clean, inexpensive storage unit that also served as a seating bench or a play table. On the side wall, a formal study table was placed for the older kids; floor-to-ceiling cabinets provided extra storage for art supplies and bookshelves for decor items and book displays.
